Detailed description of Prince Course at Princeville Resort, CLOSED 2015

Prince Course at Princeville Resort, is a Resort, 18 hole golf course located in Kauai, Hawaii.

Prince Course at Princeville Golf & Country Club first opened for play in 1991. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr.

The 7,378-yard, par-72 course has elevated tees, ravines and aggressive natural vegetation. With its stunning vistas and variety of holes, it's been ranked among America's top 100 public courses.

The course has a reputation for being difficult. As an example, #1 is a short par 4 with a small landing area in front of a large ravine that sets up a very difficult approach. This hole is one of the most difficult starting holes in golf. Read Richard Berger's review (found below) to get an appreciation for the course difficulty and his experience with #1.

The course closed in 2015, with some talk that it might become private, although more recently there has been talk that it will remain  a resort course available for public play, which appears most likely.

Renovation work, which will be overseen by Jones, is planned to begin starting in the first quarter of 2016.

One of the most spectacular golf experiences I've ever had! Yeah, It kicked my butt pretty good, but who cares. It was meticulously maintained, attentive, not stuffy service, and views to take your breath away. Makai is a very nice course if you're worried about scores, but if you're looking for a memorable golf outing... The Prince is a MUST

I'm a single digit handicap. I basically hate all of Robert Trent Jones, Jr's designs, and this course is among his worst designs. I love his father's courses and it astounds me how little his son picked up. It isn't hard to build a difficult golf course. merely force second shots from hillside lies with long irons to small greens. That is what this course is all about. That and the blind shots, of course. I don't mind a challenge, but risk/reward is just that...if you risk, there should be a chance of a reward...instead, here there is only more punishment. I found it to be Penal rather than Strategic. For example, on the very first hole, I put my drive down the middle. Six iron to the green. I hit the green and found my ball in the jungle behind it. When I complained about this to the pro after the round, his comment was, "Didn't you see the landing area to the right of the green?" I replied that I did. He then said, "You're supposed to hit your ball there, then chip up to get your par." I then asked, "So you mean it's a par 5?" The rest of the holes are similar. Very tricked up, very difficult, very hard to manage your game. If you enjoy losing balls and feeling like you've been on the Bataan death march, this is the course for you. For me, the Makai course (next door) is a far better layout with some amazing views and some challenging holes, and you'll have a better time. If you are on Kauai and REALLY want to play a great golf course, drive down to Puuakea by the airport...it's far and away the best course on the island.

It is expensive to play this course, but it is one that should be played at least once in a good golfer's experience! It is the most beautiful course I have seen, and I've been playing golf for many years. Of course it helps if you are visiting Kauai, but it is also a good excuse for going to Kauai. Princeville's Makai course is also excellant with some great holes and good views, but the Prince course is head and shoulders better. The course is demanding as well as beautiful with forced carries, a short par 4, and not crowded or with too many houses along it. All in all, it surpasses Pebble Beach in most ways. I am a bogey golfer and 67 years old, but I could play and enjoy it even though I don't drive as far as I used to.

Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Ranks with the best in this price level, Best course in the area
